The Value of Saying Thank You at Thanksgiving

More than 202.9 million Americans shopped during the five-day Thanksgiving holiday weekend in 2025, making it the busiest Thanksgiving shopping weekend on record.

Thanksgiving now sits at the center of one of the busiest stretches of the retail calendar. Black Friday, Cyber Monday, holiday promotions, and early Christmas shopping can make it easy to overlook what the day itself is supposed to represent: gratitude.

For businesses, that creates an interesting opportunity. Thanksgiving marketing can be a reason to step away from the usual sales message and recognize the customers, employees, clients, and partners who helped make the year possible.

Appreciation does not have to look like a promotion

Not every Thanksgiving message needs to lead to a sale. A business can simply recognize the people who have supported it throughout the year.

That might mean inviting employees to a Thanksgiving lunch, sending a personal note to a long-standing customer, or putting together a small gift for business partners. It does not have to be expensive. What matters is that it feels genuine rather than something pulled from a marketing calendar.

Thanksgiving promotional products can fit naturally into that approach. A branded mug, tumbler, tote bag, kitchen accessory, or piece of apparel can accompany a message of thanks without becoming the focus.

Choose something people will keep using

Seasonal merchandise can be fun, but a promotional gift has more value when it remains useful after Thanksgiving.

A customer might use a branded tumbler on the morning commute. An employee might keep a comfortable sweatshirt in regular rotation. A tote bag can become part of someone’s weekly shopping routine, while a kitchen item can find a permanent place at home.

The product does not need a large Thanksgiving graphic, either. Autumn-inspired colors, a subtle seasonal design, or a simple message can give an everyday item a holiday connection without making it disposable.

Remember the people behind the business

Customers are not the only people worth recognizing. Thanksgiving can also be a good time to acknowledge employees, business partners, and community organizations that have played a role during the year.

For employees, that might mean a team lunch, a personal note from a manager, or a small branded gift. For customers and partners, a thoughtful note or useful item can be a simple way to mark the relationship.

There is no need to turn every relationship into a formal gift program. Sometimes a genuine thank-you is all that is needed.

Start with the reason, not the product

The easiest way to make Thanksgiving marketing feel forced is to start by asking what product to order. A better starting point is the person you want to recognize and the reason you want to reach out.

Once that is clear, the product becomes easier to choose. It might be drinkware, apparel, a bag, a food-related item, or something completely different. Promotional gifts should support the sentiment rather than carry the entire message.

Thanksgiving arrives during one of the busiest periods of the business year, when promotions and holiday offers are competing for attention. A genuine expression of gratitude can offer something different.

Sometimes, the most memorable thing a business can say is also the simplest: thank you for being part of our year.
